In order to connect parts buried deep in a subassembly level, SansGUI provides users with a port exportation mechanism to expose the ports of the sub-level parts. To export a port, do the following:
In the Canvas View, navigate to the subassembly level where a part should have its port exported.
Click on the Export Port button in the Build toolbar.
Move the mouse pointer over the part from which you would like to export a port.
Click on an interior point of the part to invoke a Port Properties dialog.
Depending on whether the ports in the part are explicitly or implicitly defined, the Port Properties dialog displays all possible ports or applicable rules for port numbers, respectively.
Enter the port number to be used in the parent assembly level. Because you are defining a port to be used for linking at the parent level, the uniqueness of the entered port number within the part that contains the current assembly is required and will be checked.
If the port is implicitly defined, follow the rules to enter a compatible port number. Otherwise, the port is explicitly defined. Enter a port number from the list.
Optionally but highly recommended, enter a comment for the exported port, such as Port 1 of Part 7. This short note will be very useful when you are connecting the parts in the parent assembly level.
Click on the OK button to commit the port exportation, or the Cancel button to cancel the operation.
The Model Construction section in Chapter 1 contains an introduction to this subject. More details on implicit and explicit definitions of ports can be found at the end of the Connecting Parts with Links section.
